The Inheritance Games Review

“You’re either the glass ballerina—or the knife.”

Mystery, intrigue, attempted murder, a family disinherited. Today I bring you, The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Though this book comes with quite a few sensitive topics, I enjoyed this read immensely. So let’s carry on with the review!

Summary

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.
To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

Evaluation

The characters! The setting! The plot! The puzzles! This novel kept me guessing and on my toes. I loved the puzzles, they were so clever and fun to try and solve alongside the characters. When I read this I couldn’t decide what team I was on, Jameson or Grayson. I did choose by the end, but you’ll have to read all the reviews to find out who I picked 😉

Conclusion

So in conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed this read, so I’m giving it a 4/51 If you enjoy mysteries, brother rivalry, love triangles, complicated puzzles, then I recommend this novel to you, as long as you don’t mind…

Sensitive Topics

  • Mild language (I can’t remember if there were actual words or if it’s just the creative word replacements her friend uses. Sorry!)

  • Jameson is seen drinking and drunk a few times (he’s underage)

  • Avery’s sister has an abusive boyfriend

  • Avery has a conversation with Skye whose in the bathtub

  • Two girls are said to be “in love with each other,” doesn’t show them doing anything
